This chocolaty cake German Chocolate Cake is a layered cake with chocolate and coconut-pecan frosting. It is made of by using egg yolks, sweetened and condensed milk. The base of frosting creates a sticky sweet contrast to the chocolate cakes. The name of this cake is German Chocolate Cake. Despite its name, the cake is not of German origin. This dish gets its name from the creator of the chocolate that was originally used in the cake, Samuel German. Samuel created chocolate which is of sweeter variety of dark chocolate.

Ingredients to make German Chocolate Cake

For the Chocolate Cake

All-purpose Flour (1-1/2 cups)
Cocoa Powder (3/4 cup)
Granulated Sugar (2 cups)
Baking Soda (1 teaspoon)
Baking Powder (1-1/2 teaspoons)
Eggs (2 large)
Vanilla Extract (2 teaspoons)
Butter Milk (1 cup)
Vegetable Oil (1/2 cup)
Hot Water (1 cup)
Salt (1 teaspoon)

For the Chocolate Frosting

Milk (1/3 cup)
Cocoa Powder (2/3 cup)
Butter (1/2 cup)
Vanilla Extract (1 teaspoon)
Icing Sugar (3 cups)

For the Coconut Frosting

Shredded Coconut (1cup)
Pecans (1 cup chopped)
Egg Yolks (3 large)
Granulated Sugar (1/2 cup)
Milk (3/4 cup)
Butter (1/2 cup)
Light Brown Sugar (1/2 cup)
Vanilla Extract (1 Tablespoon)

How to make German Chocolate Cake

Instructions to make German Chocolate Cake

For the Chocolate Cake

1. To make this delicious cake, preheat oven to 375°F and grease two round shape baking pan with parchment paper in it.
2. Take a large bowl and combine all-purpose flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and cocoa powder together.
3. Take a separate bowl and combine buttermilk, eggs, vanilla extract and oil mix well.
4. Now add this mix to dry mix and combine it by using hot water. Make a paste and transfer it into prepared pan.
5. After this bake it for 30-35 minutes and check it by using toothpick. Cool it well.

For Coconut Frosting

1. Take a medium size pan and add butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg yolks and milk.
2. Now mix it well and on medium heat, bring the mixture to a low boil.
3. Stir constantly for many times until the mixture gets thicken.
4. Now remove it from heat and add nuts, coconut and vanilla extract and mix it well.
5. Let it cool completely.

For the Chocolate Frosting

1. Take a boil and melt butter.
2. Add cocoa powder and mix it well.
3. Now add powdered sugar and milk alternatively and beating to spreading consistency.
4. Thin the frosting by adding small amount of milk if needed. Now add vanilla extract and mix it well.

For making German Chocolate Cake

1. Take a plate and place one of the cake rounds.
2. Now pour thin layer of chocolate frosting over the cake layer and then pour half of the coconut frosting on top.
3. Spread it into a smooth layer.
4. Leave about half inch between the filling and edge of cake.
5. Place the second cake on top of first cake.
6. Now pour smooth chocolate frosting over the entire cake.
7. Now again pour remaining coconut frosting on top of cake.
8. Now keep this cake in the refrigerator for 1 hours or it is entirely depends on you that you want to keep it in fridge or not.
9. The delicious cake is ready to serve.
